Sr. Eleanor Burke, BVM '37
(SPHS 1968-1991)
Died April 11, 2008
Sr. Ann Marie McNamara, BVM
(SPHS 1964-1991)
Died June 4, 2008
As I read the list
of names it makes me recall many fond memories I have from the
"kitchen" during those high school years when the sisters would pop in
and sit and chat for awhile. It's hard to believe that the years are really
flying by. Sr, Anne Marie holds a soft spot in my heart as she was my homeroom
teacher as well. She would always come in after school and sit for awhile in the
kitchen and check up on me. These great ladies will fondly be remembered as we
pray for them in our family. [Editor's note: Veronica was the cook for the
Sisters during her high school years.]

I pray daily for those who not only have touched my life but also for those who
are at the door to eternal life. I will include these precious sisters in my
prayers for those who have passed into our promise of heaven. They were amazing
individuals full of patience and good words of wisdom, right when you needed it
most. Who could forget
Sr. Eleanor's laugh and dance steps in the hallways of the high school? Sr. Ann
Marie's study hall discipline helped me forge my skills in taking advantage of
silence and "down time". My heart goes out to their families; and to
their family of sisters: all of you, the BVM congregation.

Oh my gosh! Sr. Eleanor and Sr. Ann Marie were among my favorites at St. Paul's,
particularly Sr. Ann Marie. So sorry to hear of her passing. She was SUCH an
influence in my years at St. Paul's. I hope both ladies went peacefully.

I'm sorry to hear about Srs. Eleanor and Anne Marie. I took a personal typing
class from Sr. Anne Marie and I think Sr. Eleanor was the Dean of Discipline, if
I'm not mistaken. [Editor's note: She was assistant principal under Sr.
Maureen.]

Do you know how old Sister Ann Marie was? [Editor's note: 90] She taught me
shorthand and typing. Those were my favorite classes. After I was married and
had my first son, I saw her every Saturday morning at the QFI market on Alemany,
San Francisco. My son was only probably a year old or so. Now he is 41 years
old. I will remember her fondly.

Thank you so much for letting us know. They were so dear to my heart at St
Paul's. I will always carry fond memories of them.

I was at Motherhouse a year ago, June 20-25 and visited all three of those dear
Sisters.

Wow, each of my teachers have a special place in my heart. Even though we don't
get together as much...their voice still keeps me feeling encouraged. My
thoughts are with you all

us know.

I was very close to Sr. Ann Marie and owe much of my business success to her
teaching and influence. She was a wonderful woman with a wicked sense of humor
and a reputation for being strict (which she loved to promote!).

May their beautiful spirits rest in peace. Tthinking of Sr. Ann Marie in
particular brought tears to my eyes when I read this, as I will never forget her
warmth and kind and giving heart - she showed me a side to her that not all the
other students saw and helped me when I needed it most. God Bless her.

Sister Ann Marie was one of my favorites as I had her for junior and senior year
in all things 'business.' I enjoyed those years with her learning about her
family and hearing her stories. She was a wonderful person with a loving nature.
I have fond memories of those times. I send love and blessings to your
community.

Sr. Ann Marie kept me from going off the deep end many times during my time at
St Paul's. I think of her and Sr. Maureen when I speak to lots of the young
ladies about doing the right thing.

A big 'oooooh' escaped me, deflated. But then I am happy for her (Sister Anne
Marie)- no more troubles. She was such a guardian of 'her girls'- for quite some
time Andy was under her watchful 'touch her not' gaze. She wouldn't let Andy in
to my graduation, but later apologized to him and he remembers that to this day-
'the only nun who apologized to me. I loved visiting the convent at Christmas
with my cakes because she was there, and she loved the kids. I think I only took
one semester of typing- different track and all. She was really a legend and
will always be thought of with great affection.

Sister Ann Marie made huge life changes for me and I think of her often.

My favorite story about Sr. Eleanor comes from my senior year -- she had asked me to address a large group (freshman religion class, I think) in the auditorium. I started my talk with a smarty-pants remark, saying..."Sr. Eleanor didn't have her lesson plan ready today, so she asked me to speak with you." Well, the funny part is that the principal, Sr. Patricia Lucy, was standing in the back of the room. The look on Sr. Eleanor's face.....Priceless!
